“I’ve worked with the ATV team as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and a CEO. Both positions showed me they value innovation, are committed to the portfolio, and are willing to do what it takes to truly support a young company.”

-Stu Randle, CEO, GI Dynamics

Our History

Founded in 1979, ATV is a balanced firm with offices on the East and West Coasts and investments in the IT and Healthcare sectors. After more than 29 years in the venture capital industry, ATV understands its cyclical nature and maintains a steady investment approach focused on long-term results for investors. The partners at ATV rely heavily on their operational backgrounds to provide relevant, strategic advice to portfolio companies on building teams, vetting business models, assessing competition, gaining customer traction and identifying market need.

Dr. Ivan E. Sutherland co-founded ATV in 1979, and has been a consistent contributor ever since, committed to shaping ATV's interest in and ongoing commitment to the technology industry. An electronics engineer with a Ph.D. from MIT, and pioneer in computer graphics, he also co-founded Evans & Sutherland Computer and has been a significant contributor to technology development at Sun Microsystems. Dr. Sutherland currently serves as ATV’s Fund Advisor, Emeritus.

In 1986, ATV expanded its focus to include healthcare. Pieter Schiller initiated this effort with a commitment to identifying high-growth healthcare market opportunities, and served as a cornerstone in developing the healthcare investment practice that flourishes at ATV today.

Today, the ATV team is comprised of six general partners with over 100 years of cumulative operational experience: Steve Baloff, Mike Carusi, Jean George, Bob Hower, Wes Raffel, and Bill Wiberg.

ATV currently invests out of its eighth, $303 million fund, which closed in December 2007. The firm remains focused on identifying emerging-growth companies that possess leading-edge technology in communications, infrastructure, software and services, consumer technology, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and emerging technologies.
